Bench by the Hunting Lodge, Blue Hour

Walter buttons his loden jacket halfway and reaches for the thermos, its lid still steaming. After his watch, he sits outside on the bench, despite the mist creeping over the meadow. His wristwatch reads 7:32 p.m.; the light above the lodge door flicks on as he stretches. On the rough wooden table in front of him stands a small battery-powered lamp, its glow softly reflected in the enamel mug. Walter moves a little closer to the wall and peers through the fogged window into the lodge, where the decorative stag’s head hangs in the window niche. A gentle breeze makes the spruce tops at the forest’s edge sway.
